Man City Join Chelsea In Race To Sign Utility Defender

Premier League champions Manchester City have joined rivals Chelsea in the race to sign highly rated West Ham United defender Declan Rice.

The Citizens have identified him as a potential replacement for Brazilian international midfielder Fernandinho.

Declan Rice is a utility player that can play either as a centre back or in central midfield.

The young English player was linked with the London duo of Chelsea and Arsenal as well as Manchester United before he elevated his contract status at West Ham United.

The 19-year-old recently put pen to paper on a new contract with the Hammers but that has not stopped Manchester City from plotting to sign him as a long-term replacement for the ageing Fernandinho.

The 34-year-old has been an important player for Manchester City since he joined the Premier League champions from Ukrainian club Shakthar Donetsk.

He was an integral part of the Manchester City team that set many records enroute to winning the Premier League title at the end of last season.

Fernandinho and Manchester City earned a record 100 points after the 38 games played last season.
